Sport and Recreation South Africa (SRSA) is an affiliate member to The Association for International Sport for All (TAFISA) an international mass participation organization operating under the auspices of the United Nations and the International Olympic Committee. TAFISA encourages and lobbies countries to walk by creating advocacy and awareness and in 1999 the organization resolved that October be declared walking month across the world.
Subsequent to the resolve of TAFISA, SRSA through established protocol tabled a Cabinet Memo to declare October as a recreation month; the memo was then approved in December 2014, which declared the first Friday of October as National Recreation day. SRSA throughout the month of October has various activities and programmes across the country on active recreation. The highlight of those is the Annual Big Walk.
